June is over - how did I go with my goals?

... Ahhh ... *crickets chirp into the silence*

Well, let's just say that I didn't fail completely, but I may have been a little ambitious with the goals.

Let's have a look:

Complete at least one round of revisions for Blood Legacy. Nope. Not done. I didn't do it every day either. More like 80% of the days in June. So while the revisions are not complete I did get some good progress on this, although it is going a little slower than I'd like because I'm rewriting a lot of scenes from scratch.

I also had some notes back from a CP about my beginning which got me thinking a lot about that for a couple of days. I now have some good ideas for the beginning rewrite (number three) but that will have to wait till I've finished this round of revisions.

Read and write notes for critique partners. Check. Although I do still have some to do.

Write out plot for Blood Legacy. I wrote BL with absolutely zilch planning and therefore I have no record of my plot. I figure this would be a big help for revisions so I wanted to have it written down. Also, I won a ten page critique from the awesome Sarah Billington and I need to send a synopses along with it. To start the process off for both of these I have been writing a one to two paragraph summary of each chapter as I finish revising it.

Work on consistency of character voice in BL. This kinda comes under revisions, and I am working on it. I think I'll do a post on this some time soon too.

Continue writing and choose a setting for So Far to Fall. These two were bonus goals if I got through the rest, so no - they haven't been touched.

Did you set June goals? If so how did you go with them? Will you set some goals for July?

  1. Sounds like you still got a lot done. Give yourself a pat on the back for that. :D

I'm falling behind on my July goals. Still time to catch up, though. I want to have 1st round of revisions complete by months end. Unfortunately, I move at a snails pace.

  2. Hooray!  Good job!  You had a ton of goals, you should be extremely proud of yourself and what you accomplished.  Focus on what you did do rather than what you didn't.  I got all my goals completed, it looks like June was awesome for goal setters everywhere.  :)

  3. Thanks, Madeline! I definitely wasn't writing 13k words per day. O.O You're my writing hero!

  4. My June goals were just to not do any revision, and just enjoy writing. On the proviso that I won BuNoWriMo while enjoying the writing, at least. Hehe. I managed that just fine. Now that June's over, I've gotta look at getting back to revisions ;)

Sounds like you did a good job on your goals even if you didn't do it exactly as you had planned!

  6. Looks like you've made some progress. Even if you didn't 100% meet your goals, you've worked at them. Sometimes just making the goals makes all the difference.

  7. Ah...GOALS!!! I didn't set any goals for the month of June (with all the craziness of moving...) other than "Find SOME time to write". Not setting high standards for myself has meant that I've surprised myself and done much more than I'd expected (almost done with revisions!!!...for now :D  )

But I hear ya! There never seems to be enough time to handle everything we want to, and there really isn't enough to write (let's face it...given the opportunity, we'd write non-stop and that's not possible). But at least you're making progress!!!!

  8. You may not have done exactly what you wanted, but you definitely got some good work done! And that's the point of goals, right? To get us motivated to work! Way to go on your progress.

I did a "JuNoWriMo" this month, and though I didn't write 2,000 words EVERY day like I'd planned, I still wrote every day-- some days more, some days less. And in the end, I got in about 50,000 words on my new WIP! I'm pretty excited about it. :)

  9. Sounds like you made some progress. That's great. I had a change in goals. My pub wanted a short story turned to a Novella so I had to ditch the WIP and get that done. :) I still hope to finish the rough draft by July 15th. We'll see.

  10. BTW - somehow my follower status is missing. I'm following again. This is the third blog that it didn't show me following. Ugh. Not sure what's going on.

  12. Don't discount the plans for your revisions as accomplishments! I always do that. Measuring writing progress is weird that way. Not all of the effort you put into it is always reflected on paper - or in the form of a list of tasks you can cross out with a big black mark. It's daunting in the revision stage because sometimes accomplishing one thing (i.e., figuring out plans for a new beginning) results more in additional work to do (i.e., rewrite) than in finalizing something. Argh!

But all that thinking and planning work is an accomplishment and it's important, hard work, even if it's not easily measurable.

  13. Very good goals...I'm not sure I could have pulled them off. I did manage to read LOTS but other than that, revisions are coming...maybe by August.

  14. Revisions take a lot of time. Then will come another round. I think it was my 15th beginning or so when I was finally happy. Sort of. lol Sounds like you've got a handle on it and are making great progress.

  15. Nice blog you have here!

I'm certainly a goal setter. Certainly, meaning they don't always turn out the way I'd like, but you got to have a carrot dangle in front of you sometimes or you'll never cross that finish line. Good luck with your goals! You can do it!

  16. Nice blog you have here!

Goals. Those little things that push us to move forward. Got to have them. They may not turn out the way he thought, but someone has to keep that carrot dangling in front of us. Good luck to you in achieving all of your goals.

  17. I set a goal to finish revisions by the end of this month... Uhmm... yeah. A liiiiittle insane. Anyway, I realized that nothing was rushing me. So I ended up taking away that goal, because rushing through revisions wouldn't exactly be helping me.

    :-)
