Allow me to have a minor public freak-out... and an award

Some of you may know I recently decided to drastically change the course of my career. I resigned my job at a bank in New Zealand and applied for publishing and editing courses in Melbourne, Australia. I was lucky enough to get into the Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing at RMIT University in Melbourne, which I am very happy about.

Today is the first day of my course. Right now I feel like it's the first day of school and I'm feeling VERY nervous. I'm starting to second guess myself and wondering if I'm going to be good enough. The course is, after all, aimed at people already in the publishing industry and I have no relevant experience (other than a summer working in a book shop - which I loved).

Couple that with the fact that I went to eleven different schools, and I feel like somewhere along the way I missed a very important lesson on grammar (what the hell is a dangling modifier, anyway?) and you get a minor freak-out.

EEEP!

Ok... deep breath. I will be calm. I can teach myself grammar. I've learnt by myself before. Must control tummy swirling.

Aaand... moving along.

A few awesome bloggers have sent the stylish blogger award my way. Be sure to check out the blogs of Vicki Tremper, Shelley Batt, Alison Miller, and Cleveland Dietz.

I have recently done a vlog for this award, telling seven things about myself. I'll add a few more:
  1. I'm not familiar with the specifics of grammar, although I think I instinctively get it right some of the time (but not all).
  2. I have bad circulation. My feet and hands always seem to be cold.
  3. Even though I feel the cold badly, one of my favourite things to do is skiing on Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand. It's also one of my favourite places in the world.
  4. I talk to my cat. She's silly.
And I'm passing the award on to these other totally awesome bloggers:

Be sure to check them out!

So have you had any minor freak-outs lately? Is there anything you're both excited and nervous about? I'd love to hear!

PS. If you haven't checked out the Birthday Love Blogfest yet, have a look. You could win a book and get some helpful advice in the process.

  1. Thanks Shayne. I went out and bought myself some books on grammar to get up to scratch. We actually had a guest lecturer last night, and he said adults usually have about a 99% knowledge of grammar, most just don't know the specifics in order to have a conversation about it. That made sense to me.

  2. Thanks Prue :)
Hmm.. I'll have to try the exercise advice. I get nervous quite easily (I hate job interviews, and of course 'first day of school' scenarios).

  3. Wow mythology would have been cool to study!
Apparently grammar isn't really covered in schools in Australia and New Zealand anymore, other than the basic noun, verb, adverb, adjective. Not much else is covered.

  4. Thanks Lindz.

I'm well past the back-out stage now ;). Already quit my job and moved countries to do this course so I'm completely committed to the change. I just get nervous very easily. Not sure why.

  5. Thanks Vicki :). It is very exciting, and I really liked the people in my class who I got to talk to. The girl I was sitting next to was called Shari. Go figure!

  6. No worries Christine! I completely forgot to let you know about it, too. So I'm glad you saw the post :).

  7. Yea my nose gets pretty chilly too. And my feet are the worst. If I let them get cold they just won't warm up again for hours once I go to bed.

  8. Thanks for the encouragement Belisa. I really appreciate it :).
I hope you find something that makes you happy too! Even if it is in banking ;)

  9. Good luck with everything! I am bad with grammar too. My English teachers in High School were all flops. My Senior year I decided to skip English and took Mythology instead. It was fun :)

  10. Good for you taking a huge step to do what you want to do. Good luck! :)
It's quite a challenge you've set yourself and you can do it. Nervousness doesn't help - exercise, even if it's dancing on the spot to music, can help counteract the effects of adrenalin causing those swirling stomach feelings.
You're right, you can learn grammar. If it's any consolation I haven't got a clue what a dangling modifier is either...and I thought I was good at grammar!! :D
All the best. Keep posting and have fun.

  12. Thanks so much for the award!! You rock! If I had a cat I'd totally talk to her to. But since I don't, I'll stick with talking to my kids. ;)

  13. For some examples of dangling modifiers, you can go here... http://www.fictionfactor.com/articles/dangling.html

They're kind of hard to explain, but relatively simple once you see an example.

  14. Haha I've always been one to get butterflies on the first day of anything. Everyone there was really nice and it went really well. Thank you for your wishes of luck :)

  15. Thanks Ciara! I don't feel brave but I knew that I couldn't keep doing what I was doing before, and it was time to move on :)

  16. Thanks Barbara! I think I'm going to be ok with the grammar. I'll just need to work hard for this unit.

Animals are so fun to talk to, aren't they?

  17. Hi Sari, I just want to say...we women have a tendency to never believe we are enough. So, I'm here to tell you...YOU ARE ENOUGH!! Right now, from this place you begin your new journey is perfect. I envy you for taking the leap (speaking as someone also in banking...how the hell did I get there anyway?) and your passion will account for 99% of your success. CONGRATS!

  18. Congrats on your award, and best of luck in your new endeavor! I have bad circulation too, but for me it's my feet and nose that are always cold.

  21. Best of luck, i'm sure it will all go fine. As long as you stay on top of it from the start you should have no problems at all!!

    Just enjoy it.

I'm sure all the crusaders will help if you get stuck (which i am SURE you wont)

  22. Good luck, Sari! It's natural to feel nervous before embarking on any new endeavor. But isn't it exciting? Have fun!

  23. Sometimes life is all about switching gears. If we're not learning and changing than we're stagnating. That's never good. Change is freaky at first, but just keep reminding yourself that this is something you really want, and that is worth working for. Best of luck!

Oh, and congrats on your award of course! :)

  24. How exciting! Good luck with the course :)

  25. Thanks Kari Marie :). It went well in the end, and I met some really nice people.

  26. Thanks Sarah :).

The crusaders are a great bunch! So far so good. I enjoyed the first class.

  27. Exercise is good for warming hands and feet too...not so sure about the nose. Maybe you should knit a nose-warmer? ;)

  28. Sari, what an exciting time in your life. You are brave and awesome with your pursuit to success. I wish you all the best in your new endeavors.

  29. Oh my goodness... I totally understand the nerves, but I'm so proud of you for taking this step and pursuing your dreams! Don't worry, it's all going to be a piece of cake before you know it! Good luck with everything :)

    And congrats on your award!

  30. Congrats on the award. And good luck!

  31. Oh I LOVED this post! I'm excited for you...
And don't worry too much about the grammar. 28 years and I just recently discovered I never properly learned plural possessive. YIKES!

(p.s. I talk to my dog.)

  32. Sari! *HUGS* I hope it gets better for you, but if your instincts lead you into the right direction to begin with, you should do well. ;) Congrats on the job and the awards! Congrats to the awardees, too! :)

  35. Thanks Regina. I felt a lot better after the first class. It turns out I'm not the only one who doesn't know much about grammar terminology. There were a lot of us hurriedly taking notes!

Glad to have you on board for the blogfest :)

  36. Hi Donae, thanks for the link. I have checked out that site before but I'd forgotten about it. I'll pop by your blog soon :)

  37. Hi Elizabeth, thanks for the hug! Hugs back ;)

  38. Haha I definitely need a nose warmer! Especially when I ski. But then I can't breath properly O.O

  39. You are totally allowed a freak out if you need one. I am sure that it will all come flooding back to you when you start working on things. That always happens to me. I always do one of those "Oh so that's what you call that thingy!" Great award and I am going to look into the blogfest your having. I am not sure what I need... I will have to narrow it down. lol

  40. First day at school. I understand your nerves. What an amazing change your are taking on. Brave and awesome. You can do this, grammar and all.
